Traveling With Pets - Helpful Road Trip Tips For Dog Owners

Before you take your dog on the road with you, consider whether or not your pet is up for the journey. If you have a young puppy, a very old dog, or your dog is sick, injured, or pregnant they would probably be better off staying home with a pet sitter or be boarded in a pet kennel. If you're not sure whether or not it's a good idea to take your pet on a long road trip then ask your veterinarian for his or her opinion.

Getting Your Dog Comfortable With The Car or RV

Let your dog spend some time getting used to riding in the car or RV before taking them on an extended road trip. You can take your pet for several short rides to get them used to the vehicle as well as to see if they suffer from motion sickness, or become frightened. If your pet gets car sick or nervous you can talk to your vet about medications that can help.

If your pet becomes overly excited in the car you may want to consider bringing along a pet harness or carrier. It is not safe for either the pet or the driver to have a dog moving around in the car.

Keep Your Pets Comfort In Mind

It's easy to put your pet first if you are traveling alone with your dog, but if you are on a family trip and are busy taking care of the kids it is easier to forget about your pets needs.

It will be easier for both you and your pet to follow a schedule. Putting your dog on a predictable daily schedule will make them feel more secure while away from home.

Make regular stops every few hours so both you and your pet can have a break. Do not leave your dog in the car in warm temperatures while at rest stops, heat stroke can happen within minutes. If you must leave your pet in the car leave the air conditioning running.

Remember to keep water for your pet handy in the car or RV, plus some of your pets favorite toys and bedding. It's also a good idea to sign up for a road service emergency plan from a company such as goodsamers.com in case you suddenly break down on the road and need assistance.
