Gordon Lightfoot Death - Huge Internet Hoax

I was listening to the radio today when I heard the sad news that folk singer Gordon Lightfoot had died today at the age of 71. Gordon Lightfoot is a Canadian icon who began his music career at the young age of 5.

Later when I went online I was shocked to see that the news of Gordon Lightfoot's death was nothing more than an Internet hoax. Gordon Lightfoot's representative confirmed that the singer is very much alive and well today and thankfully he's taking the rumors of his death in stride.

There are tons of false celebrity deaths announced on the Internet everyday but the big difference this time is that the Canadian media picked up on the story and well known "quality" news radio stations and news websites ran this story as fact today.

Apparently this Gordon Lightfoot death rumor began on Twitter. Instead of relying on social networking sites for information, the media needs to take extra steps to make sure news stories are accurate, even if it means someone else might beat them to the story.
