Horses Poisoned - Dozens Of Horses Poisoned By Toxic Leaves

Over 20 horses have been intentionally poisoned in Southern California. The horses became sick after eating oleander bush leaves which are toxic to horses.

Horse Ranch owner Bill Tomin found oleander leaves mixed up with carrot and apple pieces in the horse stable.

Oleander is not only deadly to animals but also to people, especially small children who consume the leaves. Oleander is one the world's most poisonous plants. Ten to 20 Oleander leaves could sicken an adult while one oleander leaf could cause death in an infant or child.

100 g of the toxic Oleander leaves is enough to kill an adult horse. Ingestion of Oleander leaves causes a variety of negative symptoms. The toxins affect the stomach causing pain, vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, and salvation. Horses are likely to experience colic.

Hazardous affects on the central nervous system like tremors and seizures plus heart problems such as a racing heart, irregular heart beat, and circulation problems are also a result of Oleander poisoning.

Authorities believe that the horses were poisoned sometime between Wednesday evening July 29, 2009 and Thursday morning July 30, 2009.

Nobody knows just yet why anyone would poison the large group of horses. The ill horses are now under the care of veterinarians.
