Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the United States. Martin Luther King Jr. Day takes place on the third month of January every year and has been a national holiday since 1986.
Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 and was assissinated in Tennessee on April 4, 1968 at the age of 39. If the American civil rights activist were alive today he would be 80 years of age.
Each year those who celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day reflect on the mission of the historical figure and his well known speech titled "I Have a Dream" which he gave on August 28, 1963 for an audience of a quarter of a million supporters at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington.
Many people believe that the election of President Barack Obama, the first African American president of the United States is the fulfillment of Martin Luther King Jr.'s vision for America.
