U.S Marine Laughs While Killing Puppy

A United States Marine showed a lack of empathy when he and his colleague video taped him throwing a helpless puppy off of a cliff in Hawaii.

He seemed to think it was quite funny but he's just about the only one. Although viewers of the You Tube Video have mixed reactions regarding the incident, most people are upset and outraged at the man's actions.

The big question of course is, if the Marine can be this callous towards animals could he act in the same cold manner towards humans?

Of course he could be that callous about killing people--that's what the army trains people to do.

It's odd that people can look at pictures of dead children with half their heads blown off in the Middle East without blinking and eye, yet express shock and outrage when a soldier kills a puppy.

Could it be that the death of an innocent puppy pricks our conscience, but human deaths cannot because deep down we believe that all people are scum and are deserving of death?

Hi Anonymous,

There is actually a reason for this behavior and it's been studied in psychology. When people see situations where so many people are being killed they shut down, they are so overwhelmed that they don't know what to do with the information that they are receiving.

If they actually felt the pain and devastation of war they would not be able to function in their daily lives. It's the brain's way of coping.

If a person sees a single person (or puppy) who is being hurt they will step right in to help because they believe they can actually do something to make a difference.

The public concern over the puppy is no different then the public concern over seeing a single child being harmed, everyone freaks out. It's human nature.

I don't know any people who could look at pictures of injured children and not care, and I definitely don't think that the people upset about the puppy are the ones not caring about the children.
